Lunch at Alchemy Coffee (Unionville, Ontario)
1:04:00 PMFor this lunch adventure, I didn't have any time to prepare for lunch. Just for those who are curious, I actually do make lunches to bring to work and don't go out every day especially 2-3 hour lunches. I was naturally curious about this place since I saw a bunch of 'positive' reviews online (yelp, google, IG). I found a foodie colleague and off we went to find this place.
Atmosphere:
This restaurant/café was located in a small rundown plaza on south side Hwy 7 just near Unionville. Inside, the place didn't look that big. There were about 4 tables and couple stools available for window seating. There was a long blackboard on the left side of the restaurant with the entire menu for brunch foods and drinks (coffee, tea, etc). The décor of the place was kind of dark and lacked some good lighting.
In regards to parking, parking was very limited in this plaza (with the poorly maintained pavement). We were able to secure one quickly. Best to come here early especially on the weekend.
Service:
We found some seats and went up to the cashier to order the foods. It was mostly a self-service business. You could help yourself to water at the edge of the table.
Food:
First admission, I never got into a habit of drinking coffee. Most people that I know got it during their university years to keep their increased energy levels. For this review, I will focus only on food. The food menu (8AM to 3PM) had many options such as egg benedict, omelettes, pancakes and chicken and waffles. My colleague and I decided on the following:
Chicken and Waffles - Crispy chicken with spicy sauce, house salad - $15
Open Faced Omelette (Braised pork belly, grilled onions, swiss chard) - $15
Presentation of the chicken and waffles was very simple with clear sections for the chicken, waffles and house salad with the house sauce in the middle. In regards to the taste, the waffle was tasty and crispy. The spicy sweet dressing was a good combination for the waffle sauce. On the plate, 3 drumstick chickens were very juicy inside with a thin seasoned skin on the outside. If I had to compare this with Inspire Chicken and Waffles, this place wins.
I tried a piece of my colleague's braised pork belly omelette and it was amazing. The fat from the pork belly was just oozing everywhere on the meat and eggs. Do you know the saying "Spare the fat, spoil the flavour"? Fat makes the food so good because it carries the aroma compounds that aren't soluble in water!
Verdict:
Definitely would be interested in coming back to try their other menu items.
