Eating Dinner @ Jacky's Seafood (Scarborough)

2:59:00 PM

For this dinner food adventure, I had suggested to my wife to try out this place called "South China Noodles Delight". It was originally suggested by former Toronto foodie for very good tasting noodles. Once we arrived around 7pm, the place was empty with the owner bumming around. On the other hand, there was this new restaurant that just opened at the corner of this plaza filled with customers. Since it was so late and tired to search for other restaurants, we decided to try this "Jacky's Seafood" restaurant.

I have visited this area a couple times during the restaurant renovation period. With the renovations completed, the decor looked really upscale. This restaurant looked different from the sister restaurant, "Top 1" in Richmond Hill near my work place. The business was half busy with a lot of empty large tables. As time went by, the restaurant was just packed with long lines waiting near the door.  The washrooms were in the basement.

The servers were all Cantonese speaking. They understood our requests in Mandarin and English. It was unfortunate that they denied as a smaller table deeper into the restaurant and placed us right at the mouth of the entrance.

From first observations of the meal, the restaurant was mimicking a similar offering to Fishman Clubhouse Restaurant but with cheaper prices. In addition, the menu items had a mix of Cantonese, Sichuan and Fujinese elements. We passed on the set meals and ordered a la carte. We decided against seafood dishes for dinner. For this meal, we order 2 dishes: eggplant with mince pork and sweet & sour spare ribs (chef's special).

The eggplant with mince pork was poorly done. The eggplant wasn't completely soaked and cooked with the flavour of the sauce base. On the other hand, the spare ribs were wonderfully executed with deep frying adding another level to the dish. Before we were going to leave, they provided free red bean soup. My wife liked the texture with it being more watery than gluey.

Overall, we didn't try the seafood menu. Those items could be better tasting than what I ordered. Based on initial impressions, I probably won't come back.
