Eating @ Hot Star Large Fried Chicken (Downtown Toronto)

12:00:00 PM

For this day, I was downtown to help with campus co-op student recruitment. I had been waiting a long time to try out the Hot Star Large Friend chicken restaurant from Asia. Initially when this place opened in Nov 2015, there were long long lines going out the door. The large fried chicken trend started back in Taiwanese night markets (Taipei Shilin) many years ago and had spread around the world. I had a lot of high expectations visiting this Taiwanese chain ...

Atmosphere:
To my surprise at lunch time, there were barely any customers compared to the craziness one year ago.  The place looked clean with window seating and a lot of self advertising along the walls. There were some wooden table/chairs on the left side of the restaurant for seating up to 12 people.

Service:
Server was direct and fast. The menu options were very simple with options to upgrade to combo 1 (includes drink) and combo 2 (includes drink and fries).

Food:
I requested the the original flavour fried chicken with salt and pepper with drink combo. I had to wait about 15 minutes for the food. This was a very unique fried chicken place that everyone should try at least once. The chicken itself was quite delicious in the beginning since its super hot and salty. The drink option really helped with the hotness ...

The chicken didn't really have much of the flavours as the crispy skin was doing much of the carrying. I was disappointed that half of my chicken was scatter with bones. I noticed at one point that the crispy skin separated from the meat ... So you were eating the meat and skin separately ...  Kookoo Chicken, another Taiwanese restaurant, served the same thing but with no bones for the same price and size.

Similar to KFC, MSG was used in their mix for the skin. I was thirsty afterwards ...

Since it is a bit pricey, I don’t think I would come back anytime soon because it is still deep fried and it’s not good for my health.
